The HT-40S utilizes a unitorque brushless dc motor - and is, by definition, constant, so it rotates smoothly and quietly, and provides high performance S/N ratio and wow/ flutter. Quartz control of the phase of the oscillation frequency driving the motor is constant and generated by a quartz oscillator and the phase of the detection frequency from the speed detector are compared, thereby controlling the rpm speed.
The HT-40s sensitive straight tonearm with gimbal support support system was adopted for the bearing construction of the tonearm for reduced rotational resistance, superb traceability, and a light tracking force. In addition, by employing a low-mass straight tonearm, the record grooves are traced steadily. This feature combines to suppress the vibrations which impair sound quality.
Auto return mechanism and auto cut, When a record has been played or the auto cut button has been operated during play, the tonearm returns to the rest, and the platter stops rotating. Viscous damped arm lifter never damages stylus tip - By using the viscous damped arm lifter for lifting/lowering the stylus, there is little danger of damaging the record or stylus tip.
The operating controls are located on the front panel, and it can be operated with the dust cover in position. The easily removable dust cover may be detached when using it in a narrow place such as on a shelf, etc. The turntable employs vibration-resistant feet which combine rubber with a spring. .
Audio Technica XLE-40 Cartridge was a mid level 1980s AT cartridge and replacement stylus are very easy to find. This one has plenty of service left in it.
