The legendary M&K S150 THX speakers were used by many studios and hollywood filmmakers over the years. These original M&K S150s were regarded as one of the most accurate speakers on the market and served as a reference monitor for many music and movie soundtrack production facilities. Sometime in the 2000s M&K exited the market and the line was revised a couple of years after the purchase and rebranded as the S150 MKII. The company was closed and the rights were sold. They are now back in production under the name M&K Sound and a new complete set is priced significantly higher. The S150 line has a dedicated right, and angled center and left speakers so each cabinet was constructed differently. The left/right speakers outside edge is longer than the inside to create a 45-degree angle. M&K's center speaker was designed the same way, but with a slightly longer top or bottom depending on if the speaker was placed above or below your screen. The speakers conformed rigidly to THX specifications and therefore the speakers are designed to be listened to on-axis, plus or minus a couple of degrees.
Condition: The speakers have been tested by DALAUDIO and all components have found to be in good working order. There are no grills for most the cabinets ( the dipoles have grills), but they are available online from time to time. Some folks have even started manufacturing new grills. The cabinets show signs of use, with various scratches etc.
Sound: We listened relatively on axis within a couple meters, as these were designed. I varied my listening distance and even the angle of the speakers to see the effect and outlined below. My source was a good transport and several amplifiers made by DALAUDIO, and a several pairs of Aragon Palladium Monoblocks and Aragon 3 Channel 8008X3. Power ranged from 100 to 400 per channel. The speakers exhibit very bright speakers clear midrange/midbass. These get plenty loud with low distortion and compression through the midrange and treble. The placement is critical as the horizontal radiation pattern changes due to the tweeters having been placed to the side of the mids. They seem accurate, and articulate. You need power to hear what they have to offer.
